Hemangini Chauhan

I want my work to be something that speaks both to me and others. I want it to portray a sense of vibrancy and delicacy at the same time. In order to do so, the foundation of my work deals with the celebration of the mundane through manipulation and expression. Inculcating aspects learnt from miniature style painting, like the sense of including motifs or decorative patterns such that it goes in sync with the entire painting, making it a whole is what interests me. Decoration as part of the entire composition and not just a mere tool is what I try to achieve. My work which is often inspired by my surroundings or photographs is majorly my attempt at distorting these ready-made compositions into my own compositions. Guided by spontaneous thoughts and impulse, I hoard imageries of architectural spaces, objects, rooms, patterns, clothes, colours. Further, I, alter these architectural spaces and humdrum objects by the cut, fold, splash, tear assemble method whilst celebrating colours, patterns, motifs, fabrics. This is what guides me and the viewer from the known to unknown, from the familiar to unfamiliar and from the comfortable to uncomfortable. Such alterations let the mundane slip into abstraction and expression.

I relate my work to a symphony, of colours, brushes, patterns, textures, tools dancing in harmony with my own impulsive and spontaneous movements. Manipulation of the monotonous through such a symphony helps me transform a space into what I want it to be or what I view it as. Osmosis of the outside world into a closed space.
