Harshala's work is centered on exploring how everyday objects and materials contribute to the memory of a place, event, or experience. She keenly observes materials that surround her and seeks to find associations that might spur interesting imitations and dialogues between them. Often these objects evoke memories of a place or landscape because there is an inherent sense of imitation; sometimes the objects stand for themselves, sometimes they allude to something different but that which is similar in essence.
These works don't 'show' but rather 'suggest', sometimes even through materials that are not usually acknowledged for their aesthetic value- like used cardboard or a mosquito net. Assemblage as a medium opens up possibilities for these materials to come together in entirely new ways and for people to see them as something more than what they already know them to be. Her work seeks to synthesize today's material culture with symbolic meanings, some that she assigns herself.
Harshala Wakankar completed her Bachelor’s degree in Painting from the Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda.
