Group Projects
As a part of the ‘Studio Practice’ session in our academic curriculum, we initiated a dialogue in the format of interviews with Vasudevan Akkitham and Dr. Ratan Parimoo. These were later transcribed and compiled into two separate books, published by the Department of Art History and Aesthetics, MSU, Baroda for the Fine Arts Fair 2020. Additionally, for our archive project, we curated an exhibition entitled ‘Art, Interactivity and Technology’, observing how technology and new media coerced its way into contemporary art. The display was set up in the Department of Art History and Aesthetics adhering only to the students and faculty.
Sasha Kalrani
As a student of the bachelor’s degree in Art History and Aesthetics, I have explored a variety of topics every semester, owing to the practice of writing a research paper on one topic for every subject we had in our curriculum. In the 4th year of our degree, we write a documentation thesis on the contemporary artist of our choosing. My paper was entitled ‘Understanding the Multi-referential: The Artistic Practice of Nicola Durvasula’, in which I have established a panoptic view of Durvasula’s eclectic practice. In the framework of understanding certain contemporary art practices as eclectic, I visualize Durvasula’s work as a pendulum, where she sometimes prominently has Indian references, or prominently has Western influences, or rests in the middle with an amalgamation of both.

I grew through my fourth year, researching and writing for various subjects, to develop an inclination towards Contemporary art and theory. My learning of methodology and writing came largely from my research for the Documentation Thesis titled ‘Odd Modifications: Art, Technology, and Objecthood in the Works of Kausik Mukhopadhyay’. Kausik’s growing and complex constructions, often technology-laden, are understood through the realization of the multiplicity of meanings implied by an object. Object-centric art has evolved significantly in the last two decades and it is the inquiry of the appropriation of said found objects by the artist that lead to the object of this undertaking. I am further highly motivated by the works of Georgio Agamben, Walter Benjamin, and Rosalind Krauss amongst many others. Additionally, as the times get more pressing, I believe education and proper dissemination of information is the key to a change in collective thinking.
